Working in the civic space on stuff that matters inevitably and rightfully means dealing with issues that are politically charged. With that in mind, we felt it important to clarify Code for Asheville’s relationship to such issues. The statement below is our attempt to do that. We welcome your feedback.

Code for Asheville is a local Code for America brigade, a civic volunteer organization dedicated to making government work for the people, by the people, in the 21st century. We seek to use the power of technology in collaboration with the people, governments and civic and commercial organizations of our community to make Asheville healthy, prosperous and safe for all.

We are a non-partisan organization. We do not advocate for particular causes or viewpoints and we strive to work effectively with every part of our community. At the same time, we fully expect that our members and those we collaborate with will have strong feelings about community issues and be passionate about solutions to them. We celebrate and support their engagement in our government and community.

We also take the principle of government by the people, for the people very seriously. We will fiercely support the rights of any member of our Asheville community to equitable access to information and input into decisions that affect them.
